Shaken, Not Stirred: London’s Best James Bond Martinis

In honour of the current debate around the next James Bond (our money is on Hiddleston, by the way) we’ve  boozed our way around London 007-style to bring you the very best James Bond Martinis across the capital. Our fair city has always been a major character in the films, from exploding buildings to hair-raising speedboat rides across the Thames, but it’s our bars where Bond really comes into his own.

With a staggering 24 films under his belt, you know the drill by now – James Bond stylishly walks into a bar in his Savile Row suit awaiting his sexy Bond Girl and orders his classic vodka martini.  But do you know where to order yours?

1. The Original James Bond Martini at Dukes Bar

Londons-Dukes-Bar-serves-James-Bond-Martinis

For the original Bond experience, head to the lovely Duke’s Bar in Mayfair. Frequented by James Bond author Ian Fleming back in the day, the bar is said to be the inspiration for the classic line, ‘Shaken, not stirred’.  Embrace your inner M15 agent by ordering ‘The Fleming 89’ created by talented head barman, Alessandro Palazzi.

Where: Dukes Hotel, 35 St James’s Pl, London SW1A 1NY

2. The Foreign Import at Dry Martini

Dry Martini

Thanks to the original Barcelona branch regularly being voted one of the best bars in the world, Dry Martini on Albany Street needs no introduction. As the name suggests, it’s all about THE Martini here – there’s even a counter behind the bar for each martini being served and you can walk away with a signed certificate.

Where: Dry Martini, Meliá White House Hotel, Albany Street, Regent’s Park, NW1 3UP

3) The Martini with a Twist at Bar Termini

Bar Termini

Not been to the splendid Bar Termini yet? Here’s the perfect opportunity to visit this coffee and aperitivo bar in the heart of Soho. Settle in to a banquette and order a Marsala Martini with Beefeater Gin, Marsala Dolce, Dry Vermouth & Almond Bitters while you wait for a gold fingered, jagged-toothed antagonist to arrive.

Where:  Bar Termini, 7 Old Compton St, London W1D 5JE

4) The Coldest Martini at Mash London

Mash

Just a short walk from Termini (or stumble, if your channeling Bond in his post-Vesper depression), Mash London offers ‘The -18 Elit’ with Stoli Vodka served at, you guessed it, a teeth-chattering -18 degrees. It’s processed in solid dry ice before being served in a classic pony glass, with a garnish of red wine soaked olives.

Where: Mash London, 77 Brewer St, London W1F 9ZN

5. The Martinez Martini at Boundary

The Boundary Martini

Shoreditch bar Boundary have a list of Martinis that even Scotsman Sean Connery would struggle to make it through in one evening, but our favourite has to be the Martinez Martini, a recipe from 1860 containing a mix of vermouth, Bombay Sapphire gin and maraschino liquor to give a bit more sweetness than your usual Martini. A retro cocktail for a modern Bond indeed.

Where: 2-4 Boundary St, London E2 7DD

6. The Iconic Martini at the American Bar

American Bar Erik Lorincz bar shot 9MB (1280x853)

It was recently voted 5th best bar at the World’s Best Bar awards so you can expect great things from the American Bar at the Savoy, and their Martinis are no exception. Head Bartender Erik Lorincz has actually been involved in assisting the James Bond cast at martini-making for the last few films, so you can expect Dry Martini worthy of movie starts on the menu here.

Where: The Savoy Hotel, 100 Strand, London WC2R 0EZ

7. The Homemade Martini

James-Bond-Martinis

Channel Mr Bond in the comfort of your own home with this classic Martini recipe from Cocktails In The City – though we’ll leave the option of shaking or stirring up to you. All it takes it 3 parts Belvedere Vodka, 1 part Tanqueray No. 10 and 1 part Vermouth, dressed with a lemon twist. Cheers!
