Sun’s Out, Gun’s Out: Top 7 Outdoor Pools in Paris

Bronze your pasty body at one of these lovely Parisian outdoor pools this summer!

Despite longing for it since September, the honeymoon phase of warm weather in the city tends to fade rather quickly. While baking hot days and long summer evenings are wonderful in theory, if you’re stuck in an office, the Métro or anywhere indoors you may as well be staring at a Caribbean screensaver for all the benefit you’re getting.

As a result, when you do get to escape to the great outdoors you’ve got to make the most of it. Whether you’re a serious swimmer or posing paddler, these outdoor pools in Paris will give you a mega dose of Vitamin D and a summer mood in no time. Plus, some of them even serve cocktails…

Piscine Joséphine Baker

Piscine Joséphine Baker is as close to swimming in the Seine as you can get without bumping into a dead body or contracting E.Coli. A floating structure on the river not far from Bercy and Bibliothéque Francois Mitterand, JB has an impressive roof which contracts when the temperature rises to transform it from covered pool to outdoor wonderland. There’s also an astroturf roof terrace full of sun lounges and a small cafe.  It gets crazy busy during the summer, so try to get there early.

Piscine Molitor

Housed in the glamorous Molitor Hotel, you won’t have to worry about struggling for space alongside squealing children here – at 150-180 euro for a day pass to the pool, you’ll need a generous benefactor or a successful organised crime ring to afford a few days here. The iconic Art-Deco Piscine Molitor opened its doors once more in 2014 after a luxury renovation, and boasts connections to everything from The Life of Pi to the advent of the modern bikini. Plus, there’s even a rooftop cocktail bar for a post-swim glass of Bolli (naturally).

Centre aquatique de Neuilly-sur-Seine

This modern complex on the outskirts of Paris has not one but three swimming pools, so serious swimmers and serious sunbathers don’t have to fight for dominance. The outdoor pool is set among lovely gardens, and theres a hammam, sauna and a ‘beach’ too, as well as an enormous water slide. Just remember to tighten your bikini before you take a ride…

Piscine Keller

Following a complete renovation in 2008, the very contemporary Piscine Keller has a 50m pool, retracting sun roof, and is predominantly used by keen and competitive swimmers. They also have a unique filtering system using ozone rather than chlorine, so for once you won’t stink of chemicals when you leave.

Piscine Georges-Vallerey

Piscine Georges-Vallery was original built for the 1924 Olympics, and hosted swimming, diving and water polo activities. Despite a rather Brutalist appearance G-V has aged resonably well with two good pools (one for children), a retractable sun roof , and a popular bar on the first floor which opens in the summer.

Piscine Hébert

As a result of its hidden location behind the Marx Doromy metro, Piscine Hebert is quieter than most of the Parisian outdoor pools. It’s the perfect place for a calm, peaceful swim, but if you’re looking for something more energetic they also offer aqua gym, swimming lessons, water polo and water safety courses.

Where: 2 rue des Fillettes, 18e

Piscine Butte-aux-Cailles

17035

Another 1920s pool, Piscine Butte aux Cailles was built in 1924 and now holds listed status. It’s famous for being heated by a natural sulphurous spring, which keeps the water at a cosy 28°C all year round. There are two outdoor pools and one indoor pool, so you’re bound to find a spot for sunbathing even on the busiest days.
